Matanzas is an interesting city, that is Cuba
for those who may be visiting Varadero which lets be honest, is not Cuba. I found this city fascinating to explore on foot. I walked from the Parque de la Libertad, across the footbridge and through the residential neighbourhood of Versalles to the Hersey Train Station, where we boarded the Hersey Electric Train to take a trip through the Yunmi Valley. It was a wonderful trip, the chance to spend some time with the Cuban people without a hotel in site gave us a chance to experience the real Cuba.

We decided that about half-way to Havana we should get off and catch the next train back to Matanzas, unfortunately, the station we choose … well it had no station, just a cement platform. This was of course a step up from some of the stops along the way where there was no station or stop. The train would come to a stop, someone would hop down and start walking up a path to their home. This certainly took us back to a time that my sister and I have only read about.

A wonderful way to spend a few hours, or make a day and take the morning train all the way to Havana and catch the last train back. I think this will be on my next trip to Matanzas.
